Climbing Hold Types

Jugs

Jugs are large, deep and very friendly holds you typically can wrap your entire hand around. Jugs are great for beginner climbers, resting or warming up on steeper walls.

Crimps

Crimps are small, low-profile edges that only fit the pads of your fingertips. They require high finger strength and body tension to use well.

Slopers

Slopers are smooth, rounded or curved holds with no positive edge. Typically, you use an open hand and they rely heavily on friction and body positioning.

Pinches

Pinches are rails or blocks that require you to squeeze opposing sides using your fingers on one side and your thumb on the other.

Pockets

Pockets are indentations that accept anywhere from a single finger to three fingers.

Macros

Macros is a term born from the climbing hold industry. Theses are huge holds that often provide lots of choice on where and how to place your hands or feet.

Volumes

Not strictly a hold as they are used to change the chape of the underlying wall but depending on their placement they can create handholds such as jugs, slopers and pinches
