Tools for Polyurethane Holds

Stanely Knife

A sharp knife such as a Stanley / box cutter / razor knife to cut blocks from the foam and to carve shapes in the foam.

Note: If you have purchased a higher density specialist foam then you may wish to also use some shaping tools.

Sandpaper

The Master foam is easy and quick to sand by hand with a piece of 180 grit sandpaper.

You may need or want to give the back of the hold a quick sand by hand once it has been casted, you will need a sheet of 40 grit sandpaper to do this.

Drill Bit(s)

Any type of correctly sized drill bit will work as you will drill the hole in the master foam by hand.

M10 bolts use an 11mm drill bit and if you are using screws and /or have set screws select a bit that will just let the screw be pushed through the hole by hand.

If you have access to a press drill this will help ensure that the bolt hole is perpendicular to the flat back of the hold but this is a nice to have.

Counterbore Or Forstner Bit

To ensure Cap head bolts don’t protrude from your hold you will need a counterbore or a Forstner bit. The diameter should be large enough to take your selected washers.

Countersink bit (if required)

If you are attaching your hold to the wall with screws or a countersunk head bolt you will need a countersink bit large enough so that the screw or bolt head can be flush with the surface or recessed into the hold. The same applies for any set screws.

Mould Box

You can buy adjustable mould boxes specifically designed for Silicone Mould making from a modelling shop or online supplier. However it is easy to make one using a flat non-porous surface (e.g. a tupperware box lid), non-absorbent material (e.g. the shiny side of a cardboard box) and a hot glue gun. This is covered on The Polyurethane Hold Making Process page.
